THE TOWER OF BABEL

Happy new week friends,

I look forward to sharing with you Brilliant and Excellent tips for attaining your goals, fulfilling your Purpose and making the world a better place.

Not everything in life is at it seems, many things are more symbolic than factual. One of the examples I’ve been considering in the past week is the tower of Babel. This story is recorded in the Bible in Genesis 11:1-9 where it describe how people spoke one and the same language throughout the earth and as they moved from the east, they settled in Shinar. There they made bricks and built a tower with the aim of it reaching the heavens.

They did this in order to make a name for themselves so that they would not be scattered over the world. As they began to build, it was recorded that God came down, saw what the sons of men were doing and scattered them over the world. The building stopped and the city was called Babel.

I thought about this story and I’ve been forced to rethink this story as perhaps more symbolic than literal. How do you logically explain a group of people coming together to want to build a physical tower that would reach heaven? Even if God didn’t come to scatter them, everything in the environment would be working against them. The sun would be their first hindrance, its heat and scorch would keep them at a certain level, the cold at high altitude would be another hindrance forcing them to stay within a certain level. How do they also plan to maintain the tower? Would they have an elevator system to take them up and down the tower? Obviously, the tower of Babel seemed impractical to me from the start and eventually may have been an abandoned project. The other way to look at the story therefore is what the story teaches or symbolises as against what it says literally.

Could it be that the story was told to describe the endless possibilities that could be opened to man once he decides to unite? The phrase, “now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do” further emphasizes that once people come together to agree on a thing, they can achieve it and nothing can hold them back except themselves.

There is power in Unity

The obvious Power of Unity according to the story of Babel is that when people are in unity, there is nothing they cannot achieve. Their minds are in sync and somehow, they begin to see each other’s thought. Unity is a force that allows impossibility possible, so the next time you need to work on project, find someone to partner with you to make it happen.

TALENT ALONE IS NOT ENOUGH

Happy new week friends,

I look forward to sharing with you Brilliant and Excellent tips for attaining your goals, fulfilling your Purpose and making the world a better place.

One of the fastest ways to succeed in life is to be talented. Opportunities will abound and the chances to stand before great men is limitless. But it is important to ask that If talent is all you need then why have all the talented people not succeeded?

We talk about the beauty and wonder of talent all the time. Whether it’s athletics, music, business, speaking, leadership or writing, there are individuals who seem to be born to do a certain thing.

Nelson Mandela grew up to behold the segregationist Apartheid regime in South Africa where the white rulers held sway against the blacks who were not only perpetually politically oppressed but were also haunted, brutalized and relegated into second class-citizens in their own country. Having lost his father at a tender age of 9, he was entrusted unto a distant relative who ensured he got the right leadership training which he harnessed in later years. He was so courageous and fearless in everything he did because he knew from the onset that talent alone could not see him through.

Having read Law and qualified as a Legal Practitioner, he floated South Africa’s known Black Law firm in 1952 through which he fought the cause of several oppressed Black South Africans at relatively cheaper rates. His political activism became well known to the government and having initially started out with peaceful activism, he later had to deploy armed struggle and guerrilla warfare having realized that peaceful activism did not work in achieving his goals.  Despite having been tried and initially jailed for five years, he was later retried and sentenced to life imprisonment.

While in prison he did not give up. He enrolled for and obtained a degree by correspondence while in prison. In the 80s, several overtures were made to him by the government that he would be released from prison on the condition that he renounced armed struggle but he blatantly refused and stuck to his guns. That is courage! In a twist of fate, he was later released from prison on February 11, 1990 after having spent 27 years behind bars! http://saharareporters.com/2013/06/11/why-talent-not-enough-tayo-demola

The king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, selected the best men from among the kingdom of Israel, he instructed that certain men should be selected from the Royals and the Nobles. I began to wonder why the king of Babylon would take extra care in selecting the men that would enter his service since he would still train them anyway. He could have selected just any of the men available and rely on his training school to right any behavioral faults he needed to correct.

There are some places you may never be able to access except you integrate certain skills and character into your life. Nebuchadnezzar requested for Royals or certain men of noble character for a reason, it wasn’t just because they were royalties, these sets of people already have foundational skills that made them fit for the palace. They had wisdom, they had knowledge of literature i.e. they could read, comprehend and write, they were solution bearers and great thinkers, and they had kingly character. So, you see, it’s not okay to just have academic qualifications and have no character, no etiquette, no interpersonal skills, no regard for manners and cultures, no understanding of certain principles. To enter some highly intelligent classified gathering, you’ll need more than good looks.

It can also mean to surround yourself with people who are intelligent and known for excellent character. The people you surround yourself with will eventually reflect on the kind of person you become. For the king of Babylon to continue to keep his administration at par, he needed to ensure that the new recruit were just as brilliant or more. The wise walk with the wise and the companion of fools will be destroyed.

Discipline, Consistency and good companion:  Daniel and his friends insisted on eating vegetables and water only. Upon reaching the new kingdom, it would be very easy to throw caution to the wind and begin to live less than the original standard you began with, after all, nobody is watching as it were. Daniel’s parents were not there, nor were any of the priest who could hold them accountable. So, technically, they were free to do as they pleased. But that wasn’t the case.

Daniel and his friends did not get distracted at Babylon. Daniel and his friends sound to me like disciplined men who chose integrity over and above dishonor. They were in the midst of a highly fortified government full of crooked men and corrupt leaders and they remained spotless.  Also, that Daniel and his friends created a plan and stuck to it. The plan was simple, to stay committed to a simple meal for 10 days, they not only show commitment, but they also reaped the reward of commitment because commitment has a reward.

The two characters discussed here recorded success not because they had talents only but because of the several decisions they made.

Nature always have a message

Happy new week friends,

I look forward to sharing with you Brilliant and Excellent tips for attaining your goals, fulfilling your Purpose and making the world a better place.

“Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better” Albert Einstein

My visit to the beach lately reminded me of some lessons of nature. These lessons I think are very valuable that the ocean teaches us.

There’s something interesting how big aquatic animals swim off the beach. They only swim in deep water and not in the shallows.

Good swimmers are also aware that you need to be strong to swim in the deep water.

The classic book, blue ocean strategy also talks about creating and capturing uncontested market place.  You don’t learn to survive life’s deep water by staying in the shallows where it’s safe.

Peter in the Bible was also told to launch out into the deep and when he did, there was a catch so big, it almost sank the boat! Sometimes in life, if you want to learn when to tread and when to swim, when to go with the flow and when to fight it, how to make the big catch or see the big blessings, you must leave the safety of ankle-deep water and wade into the deep.

We must maintain a positive space, to never absorb whatever it is the environment or other people throw at you to put you down, instead, to rise above the criticism and dust them off your shoulders. It is absolutely important to stay away from anything or anyone that makes you feel small and inferior.  Maintaining a positive space gives you control over your dreams and goals, it also helps you to focus on what’s important without expending valuable time and energy trying to rationalise the way other people feel about you and your actions.

I hope these lessons are things you can relate with and integrate into your own lives, so the next time you’re at the beach, don’t just enjoy the breeze and the waves of the ocean, look around and find things that you can learn from because nature is always teaching us something.

Guide your passion now

Happy new week friends,

I look forward to sharing with you Brilliant and Excellent tips for attaining your goals, fulfilling your Purpose and making the world a better place.

Yvonne has just been promoted at work to managerial level, her colleges believe she deserved it as a result of her continued hard work and professionalism in handling herself. There were other candidate due for promotion but she was considered brilliant, effective and efficient.

Few months into her managerial responsibilities, she begins to change some of the constitution that guides the company’s allocation of resources. Company’s initial priority of funding Education and Health became diverted into entertainment, which were Yvonne’s interest, which unfortunately had no bearing with the company’s objectives nor policies. More and more money became invested into   Entertainment. The company began to lose its credibility and eventually its clients.

Yvonne was served a query and stood at risk of losing her job until she was forced to make the right decisions was in line with the company’s policies regardless of her interests.

Just like Yvonne, your interest, passion and values often determine where you channel your resources, time and energy. Forming a wide range of good and success habits while you are still being made often helps you become a well-rounded, well-adjusted individual who will/can compromise on the right and needful things.

Compromising based on our interest is a part of our human nature. People have gone for interviews and landed the job because they showed similar interest with the employer or interviewer.

Guide your interest, passion and values and be conscious of the decisions you are making. Values sometimes express themselves unconsciously which means, your body language and unconscious actions will always tend towards those areas. When the French President Macron visited Nigeria, his interest became obvious in his direct action of visiting the Africa Shrine. This shows his interest for the African culture and music.

Guide your interest, passion and values because they often determine the direction your life is taking.
